Where Do UGA Players Come From?

I have been curious if their is a certain area where our best recruits come from. So I started doing some research on the subject and pulled up all of our commitment classes from 2002-2010. Between 2002 and 2010 Georgia signed 200 recruits. I have seperated all this classes into 5 catergories:

The 1st category is out-of-state players.
The 2nd category is Atlanta players, this includes all players within the perimeter of I-285.
The 3rd category is west Georgia, this includes all players west of I-75.
The 4th category is NE Georgia, this includes all players north of I-20 and east of I-75.
The 5th category is SE Georgia, this includes all players south of I-20 and east of I-75.

OS players make up 34.5 %
ATL players make up 6.0 %
W GA players make up 19.0 %
NE GA players make up 22.0 %
SE GA players make up 18.5 %

Here is the breakdown of the 131 Georgia players in the four regions

ATL players make up 09.1 %
W GA players make up 29.0 %
NE GA players make up 33.5 %
SE GA players make up 28.2 %

Here is a more in depth look at each region in terms of star rating given by Scout.com, but first I will give you the break down of 200 players.

All Players

5 Star =     9 or 04.5 %
4 Star = 105 or 52.5 %
3 Star =   79 or 39.5 %
2 Star =     7 or 03.5 %
1 Star =     3 or 01.5 %

OS = 69 players

5 Star =   3 or 04.3 %
4 Star = 38 or 55.0 %
3 Star = 28 or 40.6 %
2 Star =   1 or 01.4 %
1 Star =   1 or 01.4 %

ATL = 12 players

5 Star = 2 or 16.6 %
4 Star = 6 or 50.0 %
3 Star = 4 or 33.3 %
2 Star = 0 or 00.0 %
1 Star = 0 or 00.0 %

W GA = 38 players

5 Star =   3 or 13.1 %
4 Star = 16 or 42.1 %
3 Star = 17 or 44.7 %
2 Star =   2 or 05.2 %
1 Star =   0 or 00.0 %

NE GA = 44 Players

5 Star =   1 or 02.2 %
4 Star = 20 or 45.4 %
3 Star = 20 or 45.4 %
2 Star =   3 or 06.8 %
1 Star =   1 or 00.5 %

SE GA = 37 Players

5 Star =   0 or 00.0 %
4 Star = 25 or 67.5 %
3 Star = 10 or 27.0 %
2 Star =   1 or 02.7 %
1 Star =   1 or 02.7 %

To look at this overall, we can determine that 1/3 of our team comes from out of state players, we recruit pretty well throughout the entire state of GA with a slight majority coming from the NE of Georgia. Of all 200 players 57% of them are either 4 or 5 star recruits and 96.5% are 3,4 or 5 star recruits. We might have only gotten 12 players from ATL but 76.6% are 4 or 5 star recruits. SE Georgia is where we bring in the highest percent of 4 Star recruits at an outstanding 67.5 % and W Georgia is where we bring in the big time talent with 16.7 % of those recruits being 5 star guys.

Impressed with the time you spent breaking that down. Seems a bit misconstrued though if many players from the Cobb county area are being lumped into "West Georgia," or were you just saying "west of I-75" generally speaking? Like, where would you put North Cobb, Lassiter, etc?

The way I divided everything up was literally just running down the interstates. With the map I was using that showed all the locations of the players, their were no county lines just interstates or main highways, so it was simpler to use that as my divider. Some counties were cut down the middle. If you would like me to further break everything down just let me know.

Good analysis. The data confirms what we were afraid of. Georgia does not get its share of top-level Atlanta area talent. Like Miami's philosophy in the 80's and 90's, we can win National Titles if we get the best players from Atlanta and the surrounding areas.

Unfortunately, too much of the recent Atlanta area talent has gone on to star at other schools:

Josh Nesbitt
Jonathan Dwyer
Eric Berry
Eric Norwood

. . . and the list goes on and on. This does not even account for the other top-level in-state talent that has eluded Athens. Our success in this recruiting ground will spell success on the field. There's no doubt about it. At the point UGA lands the majority of these athletes in a signing class, it'll be a countdown to a National Championship. Mark it down!
